Philips — The Future of Coffee
A Philips coffee design contest — a forward-looking product concept that won second prize in the competition.
Philips challenged designers to answer a genuinely open question: what does the future of coffee look like? Not an incremental improvement to an existing machine — a vision for where coffee culture, preparation, and the products that enable them are heading. The brief required both strategic depth and physical execution: a researched future vision, a selected market opportunity, and a designed, prototyped product that brought that vision to life.
ZÆT began with coffee market research — mapping global consumption trends, emerging preparation rituals, shifting consumer relationships with coffee at home and away, and the white spaces that existing products weren't addressing. From that research base, a future vision was developed: a specific, coherent picture of what coffee could mean and how it could be made in the years ahead. A market opportunity was selected within that vision, and a product concept was defined that translated the strategic insight into a tangible, buildable brief.
The product was then engineered in CAD — geometry developed to production-intent quality, not just a visual concept — and a 3D printed prototype was produced to validate the form, test the ergonomics, and communicate the design intent physically. The full concept was packaged into a competition presentation covering the research foundation, the future vision, the market selection rationale, and the product itself.
