Vanderhall Carmel lighting design for European homologation

Vanderhall — Carmel Lighting

Lighting design for the Vanderhall Carmel developed specifically for European homologation while preserving the vehicle's distinctive American design character.

Vanderhall Motor Works is an American manufacturer of open-cockpit three-wheeled vehicles. The Carmel — their enclosed, premium touring model — was designed for the US market. Bringing it to Europe required meeting the European homologation standards that govern vehicle lighting: ECE regulations covering position lights, direction indicators, brake lights, daytime running lights, and auxiliary systems.

ZÆT was engaged to design a lighting system for the Carmel that met European homologation requirements without compromising the vehicle's distinctive design character. The challenge was regulatory and aesthetic simultaneously: the lighting had to be technically compliant for EU approval, and it had to feel like it belonged on the Carmel rather than being grafted on for certification purposes.

ZÆT mapped the applicable ECE standards, identified the compliance gaps in the existing configuration, designed the full lighting system — front, rear, and auxiliary — and produced the technical documentation required for the homologation submission.
