Handle Door — Toggleable Push/Pull System
Handle Door is a toggleable push/pull door system that eliminates push/pull confusion — a ZÆT concept combining market research, product strategy, structural engineering, and industrial design into a handle that always communicates correctly.
Everyone has pushed a pull door. The problem is not the person — it is the door. A handle that looks like it should be pulled but needs to be pushed is a design failure, and it happens thousands of times a day in commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, and homes. Handle Door solves it with a toggle: the handle physically indicates whether it is currently set to push or pull, and it can be switched for either side of the door.
ZÆT developed the Handle Door concept from market research through to structural engineering and industrial design. The product strategy identified the primary market — commercial and hospitality spaces where push/pull confusion has real consequences for flow and first impressions — and the structural engineering resolved the core challenge: a toggle mechanism that performs reliably across millions of cycles, fits standard door hardware cutouts, and requires no specialist installation.
The industrial design established the proportions, material palette, and the visual language of the mode indicator — how the handle communicates its current state clearly without text, symbols, or additional signage.
How ZÆT was involved
Define Direction
Door hardware market analysis: the persistent frustration of push/pull confusion and existing solutions · Product strategy: a door handle system that toggles between push and pull — eliminating the wrong choice · Use case definition: commercial spaces, hospitality, and high-traffic domestic environments · Structural engineering requirements: toggle mechanism, load rating, and compatibility with standard door hardware
Build the Foundation
Full concept design: a door handle that visually and mechanically communicates its current mode · Structural engineering: toggle mechanism designed for millions of cycles, standard door cutout compatibility · Industrial design: the handle as an object — proportions, material, and the visual language of the mode indicator · Installation and retrofit strategy: how Handle Door fits existing doors without specialist installation
Execute and Launch
Complete Handle Door concept design and structural engineering concept delivered · Toggle mechanism validated for feasibility within standard door hardware dimensions · Visual and product identity established for Handle Door · A door handle that tells you what to do — and is always right
