The Brief
BIMAS is a Dutch ebike manufacturer established in 1996, built around a commitment to functional, reliable, ergonomic, and eco-friendly bicycles. When they set out to develop a two-wheel cargo ebike, the brief was clear: functionality, durability, and quality — at a price point that could actually reach the market. The challenge was designing a custom cargo architecture that could be produced affordably while offering the modularity that different riders and use cases demand.
ZÆT led the full product design and engineering process, developing a custom rear frame specifically designed for affordable manufacturing alongside a modular front cargo frame available in long and short versions — both interchangeable through just three bolts.
The Design
The drivetrain pairs the Bafang M510 mid-motor with a Vestel In-Tube Battery integrated cleanly into the frame. A secondary battery can be added beneath the cargo floor, extending range for heavier use. The cargo frame is available in long and short configurations to suit personal preferences — both versions swap via the same three-bolt connection between the two frame sections.
One of the most technically demanding elements was the cable steering system. Because the front cargo frame extends significantly ahead of the rider, standard steering geometry doesn't translate. ZÆT developed a custom cable steering solution to deliver the optimal steering experience across both cargo frame lengths.
The Result
The BIMAS cargo ebike was developed through to production-ready prototype — with custom rear frame, modular cargo system, Bafang M510 drivetrain, extended battery option, and the bespoke cable steering system — all engineered for affordable manufacture and validated through physical ride testing.
