Design Licensing: A Different Way to Bring a Product to Market

Most manufacturers know what they are good at. Making things. Running production lines. Managing supply chains. Delivering at volume, at quality, at cost.

What they are less good at is originating product. Deciding what to make. Designing it. Engineering it to the point where it can actually be handed to a factory floor and built correctly. This is not a criticism. It is simply a different discipline.

That gap between manufacturing capability and product origination is where most new product projects stall. The manufacturer has everything needed to build, and nothing needed to start.

ZÆT's Design Licensing channel exists to close that gap.

What design licensing is

ZÆT has been developing original product concepts alongside client work since the studio was founded. Market-researched, industrially designed, and engineered to be built. Concepts that belong to ZÆT and that we have been developing without a specific client brief.

Until now, those designs sat in our portfolio. From today, they are available to license.

A manufacturer licenses the IP: the design, the engineering documentation, the CMF specification. They bring the product to market under their own brand, or co-branded with ZÆT. The concept phase, the design phase, and the engineering validation phase are already done. The manufacturer goes straight to production.

Why it is better than starting from scratch

A full product development process takes months and costs significantly. From brief through concept, design, engineering, and manufacturing alignment, most of that cost is absorbed in the early phases before a single component is manufactured. Most of the risk lives there too. The concept that turns out not to be viable. The engineering that does not survive contact with the factory. The design that gets compromised at tooling stage.

Licensing a ZÆT design removes all of that.

The research has been done. The market opportunity has been validated. The industrial design has been developed to a standard that communicates quality to a European buyer. The engineering has been resolved to the point where the design can be handed to a manufacturing partner and built as intended.

What remains is the part manufacturers are already equipped to do: produce it, brand it, and bring it to market.

What is available

ZÆT's available designs span physical products across multiple categories. Each design has been developed with a specific market opportunity in mind and engineered to be buildable at realistic production cost.

The full catalogue is shared under NDA following an initial enquiry. We do not publish the designs publicly. Not because we are being secretive, but because the designs have commercial value and that value belongs to the manufacturer who licenses them, not to anyone who visits a website.

The enquiry process is simple. Tell us what type of product you are looking to manufacture and your territory. We follow up within two business days with the relevant designs from the catalogue, full renders, engineering documentation, and licensing terms.

Who this is for

Design licensing works best for manufacturers who have strong production capability and an established route to market, but who want to expand their product range without investing in a full design and engineering process.

It is particularly well-suited to manufacturers entering the European market for the first time. European buyers are design-literate and expectation-driven. A product that looks like a Chinese OEM generic will be priced and positioned accordingly. A product that has been designed for the European market, with the proportions, the CMF, the finish quality, and the design language that speaks to a European buyer, commands a different conversation entirely.

ZÆT's designs are built for that conversation.
